Preservation of specialist focus

Can we participate in a knowledge network without losing our specialist focus?

In a national thesaurus for crafst, materials are described in relatively global terms only. A glass museum and a museum with an extensive wood collection are unable to accommodate their very specific, much more elaborate knowledge on these materials in the general thesaurus.

Can the specific thesauri be linked to the general thesaurus without the necessity for museums to let go of their specialist, tailored knowledge sharing? Or, conversely, is it possible to enrich the general thesaurus by providing links to the local, specialist thesauri of the museums?

In short

  • Is it possible to link local, specialist knowledge-sharing systems to a more global knowledge-sharing system without losing the tailor-made functionality of the local systems?
