Roman Pottery Fabrics

from the Tongeren collection

One of the most important reference collection of Roman pottery of the Northern Provinces is located in Tongeren, Belgium. A part of this collection has been published in: Willems S. 2005: Roman Pottery in the Tongeren reference collection: mortaria and coarse wares, VIOE rapporten 01, Brussel. The present digital publication is made in close cooperation with drs. Alain Vanderhoeven (senior researcher) and Hans Denis (photographer) both from the Vlaams Instituut voor Onroerend Erfgoed (VIOE) and Sonja Willems, the author and, presently, researcher at INRAP, France.

The unique cooperation of the  Vlaams Instituut voor het Onroerend Erfgoed and the Dutch Rijksdienst voor Cultureel Erfgoed shows the ambition of the National Reference Collection to cross borders.

Revolutionary are the revolving sherds that allow archaeologists to have a detailed view of the virtual fresh breaks comparable to the view with the naked eye of the real object or even better. This presentation of the sherds in this way allows rapid recognition and determination and is extremely efficient in the field or laboratory. Also for educational puposes this method of display is highly effective.

We thank drs. Paul Boon, who was part of the NWO-CATCH project RICH team from 2005 - 2009, for his vision and perseverence in developing the recording device for the fresh breaks. Details can be found on the apparatus and software can be found here
